Scholarships for Women

Are you a woman who is considering going to college? Whether you are just now thinking about going for the first time, or you are one of the many women returning to college, you are probably wondering how to pay for your schooling. Scholarships for women can be a great benefit, and you will find a number of options available today. First, let’s learn more about what a scholarship is and how they work.

What Are Scholarships for Women?

A scholarship is a monetary award given to those who want to further their education; similar to grants. However, unlike a grant, these are generally geared toward those who are attending college and who need help to finance the education. It can cover all or just some of the expenses of the tuition. For many women, scholarships are an ideal way to reduce the cost of getting a quality education.

Typically, there are certain requirements that need to be met to qualify for a scholarship. In some cases, they are based on the field of study, and in other cases, they could be based on gender. Below, you will find a range of scholarships for women that could work well for you.

1,000 Dreams Scholarship

This scholarship provides $1,000 for one-time educational assistance for young women who are enrolled in high school, or who are of college age. This scholarship is meant for other expenses rather than tuition, such as textbooks, graduate exam fees, educational conferences and similar expenses.

AARP Foundation

The AARP Foundation Women’s Scholarship Program was started in 2007, and it can provide scholarships for women who are aged 50 and over by March 30 in the year they apply. They also need to be low-income, trying to receive either a technical or vocational education, or an associate’s or bachelor’s degree. They also need to be enrolled in a school or technical program that has accreditation from the U.S. Department of Education within six months of being awarded the scholarship.

The Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation

To become eligible for this scholarship, the applicants must be female, have a history of great academic performance, along with extracurricular success even while they may have had socioeconomic hardships in their life. They also need to be a resident of California and a citizen of the United States, or a noncitizen with an Alien Registration Number. They also need to be current students at Cabrillo, Hartnell, or Monterey Peninsula Community College.

Keep in mind that these are only some of the many scholarships for women available today. There are others, and it is possible to use sources on the Internet, along with consulting companies, that can help find scholarships for women today.
