Chapter 3.2

Foundation Databases

While subscriptions to online grant databases can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand, they can be worth the money if used correctly. Most of these databases offer detailed information on thousands of foundations and corporations, and the grants they offer. Two of the best are those offered by The Foundation Center in Washington D.C. (www.foundationcenter.org) and Foundation Search (www.foundationsearch.com). Both offer a comprehensive listing of foundations registered with the Federal government and business grants that have been awarded over the last decade.

The Foundation Center

The Foundation Center, located in Washington D.C., is a leader in U.S. Philanthropies, offering loads of free services and training to those who want to learn more about finding and applying for business grants. The organization also maintains a comprehensive database of U.S. grants and funders. Their online directory, "Foundation Directory Online," can be purchased for a fee, but is also available at many regional libraries/learning centers across the U.S. at no charge for those who have the time to use it during library hours. To find a library near you that offers the free service, check out the Center's Web site at www.foundationcenter.org for a complete state-by-state listing.

If you'd like to buy the database to use at your home and office, it is available in several levels for as little as $200 and as much as $1,200.00 for one year of service. While the basic (and cheaper) service does offer information on nearly 10,000 foundations and grants nationwide, the pricier service is more in depth, offering 92,000 foundation grant opportunities and 11 searchable keyword fields to help make your search easier. It also allows the user to search Federal 990 reports, which can be a great analyzing tool when choosing grants to apply for.

Foundation Search

Foundation Search may be the answer to your dilemma if you need information on Canadian and global business grants also. Privately owned and operated by a Canadian Corporation since 1988, Foundation Search is as comprehensive as the Foundation Center's Online Directory. It also offers a few extra benefits, including a separate database for offshore foundations, 990 files for all subscription levels, comprehensive giving trend graphs, and a separate database offering a listing of brand new foundations as soon as they register with the federal government. This may give you an edge over your competition in the application process.

Foundation Search boasts more than 90,000 grant listings in its database, and you can search for either foundations or grants by type, region, interest area, recipient, level, size, or by using any number of other criteria available.
