<p>Grant writing is highly competitive, so anything you can do to give yourself an edge will help you increase your chances of success.</p>
<p><strong>Tip 1.</strong> Follow the instructions exactly. Grantors have to read many proposals and will likely deny a proposal solely for failing to comply with their instructions. They appreciate and are likely to remember proposals that are written as instructed.</p>
<p><strong>Tip 2.</strong> Make sure you have a DUNS number if you are applying for a federal agency grant. An explanation of DUNS numbers and information on how to get one is provided later in this chapter.</p>
<p><strong>Tip 3.</strong> Do not assume that different funding opportunities (RFPs or other designations) from the same grantor will have the same requirements for procedures, content, or format.</p>
<p><strong>Tip 4. </strong> Study the RFP evaluation criteria. This will help you understand the grantor’s needs and priorities, which will make it easier to determine what to emphasize as you match your proposal with their needs.</p>
<p><strong>Tip 5.</strong> Convince the grantors that funding your proposal is a smart, good investment in you or your business/organization. Show that you will use their money carefully and help it achieve their goals. Like applying for a job, you need to show the grantors, in measurable terms, how they will benefit as a result of selecting your proposal.</p>
<p><strong>Tip 6.</strong> Emphasize what you can do for the grantors. Tell them what they want to read in all aspects of your grant proposal. Include evaluation procedures to demonstrate your success.</p>
<p><strong>Tip 7.</strong> Expect to write and rewrite your proposal several times.</p>
<p><strong>Tip 8.</strong> Keep your proposal short and precise.</p>
