<h1>Grants for Women</h1>

<p>Not all women are as fortunate as Judge Sonia Sotomayor.  Of course, she worked extremely hard to get where she is, and she will soon be the newest Judge of the Supreme Court of the United States.  Judge Sotomayor will have a job guaranteed for the rest of her life. </p>
<p>Not so for the rest of us.  In the 1950's, women were expected to be homemakers, and the burden of bringing home the bacon fell on the men.  Today, we live in a different era, an era so extraordinarily unlike forty or fifty years ago that we can't even imagine how our grandparents lived.</p>
<p>Unlike the time of our ancestors, women have the opportunity today to get a good job and make a wage appropriate for their educational level and responsibilities.  However, it wasn't always like that.  For decades, women received second-class treatment in the workplace.  Women who had the talent to run the business were relegated to positions of bookkeepers and secretaries.</p>
<p>The Unites States Government and private foundations around the country recognize this injustice, and have taken pro-active steps to give women the opportunity to earn a living and become a success in any field of their choice.  The Federal Government and private foundations are offering grants for women to get them started on careers, in business, and in professions of their choice.</p>

	<li><strong>2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act</strong> - This Act has changed the playing field for women.  Log onto your state of interest at <a href="http://www.state.gov/recovery/" target="_blank">www.state.gov/recovery/</a>  to find out the grants and assistance from this plan that are available in the state of your choice.</li>
	<li><strong>Federal Monies</strong> - Search for all Federal programs for women at <a href="http://www.cfda.gov" target="_blank">www.cfda.gov</a>. </li>
	<li><strong>County Monies</strong> - These may be somewhat harder to come by, but there are programs that offer women assistance in housing, business, education and health care. Log onto <a href="http://www.govengine.com/local/gov/index.html" target="_blank">www.govengine.com/local/gov/index.html</a> for the county you seek.</li>
	<li><strong>Foundations and Private Donors</strong> - There are plenty of private sources that may offer assistance to women in a myriad of ways.  Log onto http://fdcenter.org and www.guidestar.com for databases to these private donors.</li>
	<li><strong>Federal Assistance</strong> - The Federal Government has close to 1,000 non-profit agencies and organizations available to assist women in several areas.  The best way to find out what is available in your area is to log onto <a href="http://www.hud.gov" target="_blank">www.hud.gov</a> or telephone the Locator at <em>1-800-569-4287</em>.</li>
	<li><strong>Local Assistance</strong> - There are local community agencies that are available to help you locate government funding or other money sources for women.  For the community agency in your area, log onto www.communityactionpartnership.com or call <em>(202) 265-7546</em>.</li>
	<li><strong>Office of Community Planning and Development</strong> - This office can help identify women's grant programs that you may be eligible for. 	<li><strong>Ms. Foundation for Women</strong> - This foundation creates opportunities for women and girls to help them develop their skills and have their voices heard. 	<li><strong>Department of Labor</strong> - This Department provides free publications for and about women in the workforce.
