<h1>Non-Profit Agencies and Organizations</h1>
<p>The vast majority of the grants that are offered by the Federal Government as well as by private foundations are designated for eligibility for non-profit agencies and organizations. A non-profit organization is defined as an organization that does not distribute its surplus funds to owners and shareholders, but uses them to pursue its goals. </p>
<p>Non-profit organizations exist for the sole purpose of providing programs and services that are of public benefit. While they are able to earn a profit, often called a surplus, these earnings must be retained by the non-profit organization for its future provision of programs and services. These earnings can not benefit any individual or stakeholder. Non-profit organizations are able to put considerable funding into leadership and management positions. Over the past twenty-five years, non-profits have been able to achieve their missions by effectively using for-profit techniques, such as internal management, accountability for all departments and the monitoring of all departments and personnel to ensure that the organization is making the best use of its funds.</p>
<p>In the U.S., nonprofit organizations are formed by incorporating in the state in which they expect to do business, which creates a legal entity. This enables the non-profit organization to conduct business, own property and be treated as a corporation under United States Business Law. The act of incorporating creates a legal entity enabling the organization to be treated as a corporation under law and to enter into business dealings, form contracts, and own property as any other individual or for-profit corporation may do. The main difference between for-profit and non-profit companies is that a for-profit can issue stock to stockholders, who are entitled to receive dividends.</p>
<p>Non-profit entities are allowed to file for tax-exempt status under U.S. Business Law. In this way, non-profit organizations are exempt from income tax and other taxes. This is done by applying to the Internal Revenue Service. After review, the I.R.S. issues a certification acknowledging an organization as a non-profit entity, and issues it a 501(c)(3) certification number.</p>
<p>Over the years, grants have become a primary source of funding for non-profit organizations. There are hundreds of organization types that are eligible for both government and private foundation funding. Our first few chapters include thousands of grant opportunities delineated by category. To find grants for non-profits in those categories, simply refer back to those chapters. </p>
<p>In this section, we shall concentrate on those areas not previously covered. In this way, you can easily refer to these areas to look up funding sources specific to your needs.</p>

<li><strong>2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act</strong> � This Act has affords opportunities in a myriad of fields, such as construction and education. Log onto your state of interest at <a href="http://www.state.gov/recovery/" target="_blank">www.state.gov/recovery/</a> to find out the grants and assistance from this program that are available in the state of your choice.</li>
<li><strong>Federal Monies</strong> � Search for all Federal programs at <a href="http://www.cfda.gov" target="_blank">www.cfda.gov</a>.</li>
<li><strong>State Monies</strong> � There are programs available in many areas. Follow the protocol for the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, as it applies to your state. For example, log onto <a href="http://www.recovery.ca.gov" target="_blank">www.recovery.ca.gov</a>, if you are interested in grants in the State of California. </li>
<li><strong>County Monies</strong> � These may be somewhat harder to come by, but there are programs that offer assistance in housing, business, education and health care. Log onto <a href="http://www.govengine.com/local/gov/index.html" target="_blank">www.govengine.com/local/gov/index.html</a> for the county you seek.</li>
<li><strong>Foundations and Private Donors</strong> � There are plenty of private sources that may offer assistance to non-profit entities. Log onto <a href="http://fdcenter.org" target="_blank">fdcenter.org</a> and <a href="http://www.guidestar.com" target="_blank">www.guidestar.com</a> for databases to these private donors.</li>
<li><strong>Federal Assistance</strong> - The Federal Government has close to 1,000 non-profit agencies and organizations available to assist in several areas. The best way to find out what is available in your area is to log onto <a href="http://www.hud.gov/offices/hsg/sfn/hcc_home.cfm" target="_blank">www.hud.gov/offices/hsg/sfn/hcc_home.cfm</a> or telephone the Locator at <em>1-800-569-4287</em>.</li>
<li><strong>Local Assistance</strong> � There are local community agencies that are available to help you locate government funding or other money sources.
